Electric utilities maintain millions of poles, crossarms, insulators, transformers, conductors, switches, and other critical components across the United States.
Weather, lightning, wildlife, aging infrastructure, environmental exposure, and equipment deterioration can contribute to outages, repairs, emergency response, and substantial maintenance costs.
GLS Utility Products is developing products intended to help utilities address some of these challenges through solutions that can be incorporated into existing and future electrical distribution infrastructure.

GLS Top Rod
Lightning Protection Designed for Utility Distribution Structures
Lightning strikes can damage multiple components of an electric distribution system, including crossarms, insulators, conductors, transformers, switches, and other equipment.
The GLS Top Rod is a proprietary utility-pole lightning protection concept designed to provide a preferred termination point for lightning and help direct lightning energy toward the grounding system.
The design is intended to integrate with utility pole construction while providing additional protection for equipment installed below it.

GLS Illuminated Reflective Utility Crossarm
Improving Utility-Pole Visibility and Helping Deter Predatory Birds
Utility poles and associated equipment can be difficult to identify during nighttime conditions, severe weather, emergency response situations, and other low-visibility environments.
The GLS Illuminated Reflective Utility Crossarm is being developed to increase the visibility of utility infrastructure while maintaining the functional characteristics required of a utility crossarm. The concept combines utility infrastructure with enhanced visibility features intended to improve identification of pole locations and equipment.
Predatory Bird Deterrence
The GLS Illuminated Reflective Utility Crossarm is also being developed to help deter large predatory birds from landing, perching, or nesting on utility structures. This may include the American Bald Eagle, Golden Eagle, hawks, owls, ospreys, and other large raptors.
By helping discourage predatory birds from occupying areas around energized utility equipment, the design has the potential to provide additional protection for birds, utility equipment, and electric-system reliability.

The GLS Top Wrap is a protective pole-top covering designed to provide an additional barrier around the upper section of a wood utility pole.
The product is being developed as a relatively simple infrastructure-protection solution that can potentially be incorporated into new construction or maintenance programs.

With 26 years of electrical in-field inspection and operational experience, I have observed recurring problems involving utility equipment, infrastructure damage, environmental exposure, reliability, and maintenance.
Those experiences led me to ask a simple question: Can we build a better solution? GLS Utility Products is the result.
The company's product concepts have been developed around problems observed in actual utility environments rather than products created solely from theoretical market opportunities.
That field-based perspective continues to guide our product development.
OUR DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY
GLS Utility Products is working toward a disciplined commercialization process that includes:
